Only является одной из наиболее распространенных частиц в современном английском языке. Чаще всего она выполняет ограничительную функцию, и ее эквивалентами становятся русские частицы только и лишь:

Кроме того, only может иногда выполнять эмфатическую (усилительную) функцию. Здесь возможно усиление разных значений и, соответственно, разные варианты перевода:

В переводе происходит передача усилительного значения, а также, при контекстуальной возможности, экспликация дополнительного смысла, как показывают следующие примеры:
